The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India. The practice of yoga focuses on achieving harmony and balance between the body, mind, emotions and spirit. To achieve this, yoga uses movement, breath (pranayana), posture (asana), relaxation and meditation in order to establish a healthy, lively and balanced approach to life. For many of us unfamiliar with yoga, this conjures up images of yoga gurus sitting in absurd poses while chanting. In modern context, yoga can teach us how to attain physical health, a healthy mind and enlightenment; striking a balance between our busy lifestyles and a life of balance and focused energy.
